The Legal Aid Department was established in 1970. In the past 50 years, our mission remains the same, i.e. to ensure that any person who has reasonable grounds for taking or defending a legal action is not deprived from doing so because of lack of means. Legal aid plays an important role in ensuring access to justice. Over the years, we have been moving with times and continuously expanding our scope of services to meet the changing needs of the community. As an integral part of the legal system in Hong Kong, legal aid has and will continue to contribute towards upholding the rule of law in Hong Kong.
